Gi Joe: 1988 Personnel and Equipment
Personnel:
Armadillo: Philo R. Makepeace was a rather fast (though mostly safe) driver in the civilian market before repeated complaints caused him to seek similar employ in the military. That's when it was discovered that Philo drives not just quickly, but very, very rough, too! Armadillo comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Blizzard: Gregory is tough because he has to be, for he knows that with his job as a cold weather soldier - much less the instructor of other like soldiers - he will become a statistic if he goes easy on himself... and his charges will as well, if he goes easy on them. Blizzard comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Budo: though he was content to spend his time enjoying heavy metal and tinkering with his Harley, young Kyle was surprised to learn his great-great-grandfather was a samurai warrior. Given the family's ancestral home, he has tried to live up to his legacy, and done a pretty good job of it. Budo comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Charbroil: Shannon grew up working with fire, whether he was heating water pipes with a blowtorch in rural Minnesota or shoveling charcoal into blast furnaces for a living. He's comfortable around the dangerous stuff, which makes him an excellent flamethrower for the Gi Joe team! Charbroil comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Ghostrider: Jonas has worked all his life to avoid notice, a trait that has evolved to an almost super-human degree. Even when it's written down in front of them, his fellow Joes can barely remember what his code name is, much less what he looks like or anything else about him. Ghostrider comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Hardball: a former minor league baseball player, Wilmer quit after five seasons once he realized the leagues valued 'star power' over 'teamwork'. He then joined the Army to find a group which appreciated his team player attitude better - and he was more than happy with what he found! Hardball comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Hit & Run: Brent was orphaned when his parents were wiped out by a drunken driver when he was but three years old. He then decided he'd join the Army as a youth, and worked all his life to prepare for his enlistment - mostly by running all the time. And Brent runs very, very well...! Hit & Run comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Lightfoot: described as a 'Zen fussbucket', Cory Owens is something of an expert demolitionist. He's memorized details of just about every explosive known to man, but since he knows how easily a bomb can kill a body, he's become ultra paranoid - and is always looking for boobytraps everywhere! Lightfoot comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Mangler: a relative Army 'newbie' who showed significant promise, Mangler was invited to 'try out' for the Gi Joe team, which he did. He managed to make his way through the horrifying entrance tests, though he died in an almost heroic fashion during his 'final exam' in Trucial Abysmia. Mangler comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Muskrat: born and raised in the swamps surrounding Thibodaux, Louisiana, Ross A. Williams grew up tough and quick. He breezed through his Ranger training and Jungle Warfare school as a result of his unique background, and easily made his way onto the Gi Joe team upon being invited! Muskrat comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Repeater: a long-serving Army Ranger, Jeffrey Therien enjoyed being a soldier, and was very good at it, but couldn't really hack the whole 'Army politics' thing. As such, he was directed to the Gi Joe team, where he can fight to defend freedom without ruffling oversensitive feathers. Repeater comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Sgt. Slaughter: a veritable force of nature, the Sarge was born on Parris Island, and raised to become about as tough and as mean as is humanly possibly - a perfect Marine! The ultimate drill instructor, the Sarge is who the Joes rely upon to keep themselves on their toes! Sgt. Slaughter comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Shockwave: showing true bravery as a member of the Detroit S.W.A.T. team, Jason Faria wanted to use his skills for even more good, and applied for a position on the Gi Joe team as a result. Being accepted, he was trained up in the S.O.P. and made one of the Gi Joe team's experts in urban combat! Shockwave comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Skidmark: Cyril seems a perfectly tempered young man with an uncanny attention for detail and propriety - at least, until you put him behind the wheel of a vehicle - any vehicle. That's when you meat the real Cyril, and learn just why he received his curious code name! Skidmark comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Spearhead & Max: an incredibly likable and persuasive insurance salesman, Peter Millman gave all that up to join the Army, possibly because he felt guilty about fleecing so many people of their hard-earned money. He proved just as charismatic in the military, and makes a great leader! Spearhead & Max come in Classic and Saga styles!
Starduster: originally a circus acrobat, Edward was recruited onto the Gi Joe team when Duke saw his act and thought it'd be even better with a jet pack. Somehow convincing Edward of this logic, Duke got him onto the team, where he's been wowing his fellows in the air ever since! Starduster comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Steel Brigade: the Gi Joe team excels in all areas, but sometimes it comes in handy to have a local angle on domestic activities. When the Joes need such a specialist, they make a call to the Steel Brigade, their reservists and experts in local matters while active in the U.S.A.! Steel Brigadiers comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Storm Shadow: Tommy Arashikage, Cobra's greatest ninja operative, didn't originally start out with evil aims. However, thanks to the machinations of Cobra Commander, he was swept into a life of crime and terrorism, one that continually comes back to haunt him...! Storm Shadow comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Super Trooper: Paul got into West Point the hard way - right out of Basic. Having made his way in despite the odds against him, Paul then became the top graduate of a brand new, covert ops school that combines advanced technical ability and a curious dose of public relations skills. Super Trooper comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Wild Card: the military appreciates Eric's unparalleled destructive capability, they really do, it's just that they wish he could save it for the bad guys. Something about the man though, it causes everything he touches to bend, break, fall apart, or otherwise disintegrate. Seriously! Wild Card comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Windmill: a former Army Flight Warrant School instructor, Edward Roth also doubled as a helicopter test pilot. It was in this capacity that he mastered the experimental Skystorm X-wing Chopper, and thus earned himself a place on the Gi Joe team - and one for his new ride, as well! Windmill comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Night Force:
Crazylegs: David was on his way to becoming one of the world's greatest organists, but ultimately his rather short fingers put the kibosh on that goal. Needing a direction, he instead enlisted in the Army, and now jumps out of airplanes while his internal sound track is playing Bach... Crazylegs comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Lieutenant Falcon: a second generation Green Beret, Lieutenant Vincent Falcone is himself a natural-born leader. The man excels at inspiring those who serve beneath him, and is a multi-lingual expert in all manner of counter-terrorist operations around the globe. Lieutenant Falcon comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Outback: Stuart is the consummate survivalist - but then, as a survival and jungle warfare instructor, he'd better be, really. The man is at his happiest when he's living off the land, hiking and camping days away from civilization and immersing himself in the wilds that surround him! Outback comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Psyche-Out: wielding a doctorate in psychology and an expertise in predictive behavioral analysis and paranoia-inducing ultra low frequency radio waves, Kenneth is the perfect psy-ops expert for the Gi Joe team. He brings his mastery of others' actions to bear in all kinds of covert operations! Psyche-Out comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Sneak Peek: growing up with a love of nature in eerie Bangor, Maine, Owen King joined the Army as soon as he could. Using his wilderness skills to become a fully qualified Army Ranger, Owen has since gone on to become one of the Gi Joe team's greatest reconnaissance operatives! Sneak Peek comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Tunnel Rat: after being raised on the rather surly streets of Brooklyn back in the day, Nicky grew up to be tough, indomitable, and somewhat jaded. Always looking for a good challenge, he's more than ready to climb into nasty Cobra tunnels to ferret out the bad guys! Tunnel Rat comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Tiger Force:
Bazooka: a former tank jockey until his sudden epiphany about untrained yahoos immobilizing million dollar hardware with two hundred dollar handheld rockets, Bazooka instead became a missile specialist himself. Now a highly trained yahoo, he excels in destroying enemy vehicles for the Gi Joe team! Bazooka comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Duke: before being recruited onto the Joe team, Conrad had a history of working in Special Ops, and brought that sneaky expertise to the team as its field leader. Second only to Hawk in the team's leadership, Duke has consistently led the Joes to victory against Cobra over the years! Duke comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Dusty: born and bred in dry, dusty Las Vegas, Ronald grew up surrounded by the desert - and found it to be his best friend by the time he was in high school. As such he made for a great desert specialist, a vital skill the Joes need, since Cobra frequently works in desert climes... Dusty comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Flint: joining the Army for the promise of adventure after he grew bored with the 'Groves of Academe', Dashiell used his innate smarts to excel in various areas of military expertise, and was recruited onto the Gi Joe team by an old acquaintance of his, the one and only Duke! Flint comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Frostbite: born in crisp, cool Galena, Alaska, Frostbite grew up dealing with the dread of winter on a daily basis. This taught him how to easily do his job under such conditions, no matter what it may be, which has helped him as both an Alaskan Pipeline techie and a Joe operative! Frostbite comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Lifeline: though some of the more... gung-ho members of the Joe team (such as Leatherneck) may believe otherwise, Edwin is one of the group's most valuable members. An avowed pacifist, he will go out of his way to save another's life - even risking his own! Lifeline comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Recondo: growing up to hate Wisconsin's cold winters, young Daniel wanted to explore the deepest African jungles as a child - and grew up to do just that. Both on and off the Joe team, Daniel has become an expert in jungle combat - and many other disciplines! Availability:
Roadblock: aspiring to be one of the world's greatest chefs since he was a child, Marvin put himself through the Escoffier School in France - and then joined the Army to learn from their chefs. Little did anybody know he'd become one heck of a heavy machine gunner, too! Roadblock comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Skystriker: Alexander Russo, the Gi Joe pilot known as Skystriker, was born to fly. His father ran a Maryland Air Force base, and he became a fighter pilot himself after watching them flying over head for so long. He's so good the Joes snatched him up for their elite Tiger Force unit! Skystriker comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Tripwire: one of the single most jittery human beings you're likely to meet, Tormod is something of a hyper-active bumbler and clumsy oaf. Of course, he's the Joe team's ultimate demolitions expert because explosives are the only thing that calm him down, unlike everyone else...! Tripwire comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Equipment:
the Desert Fox: a high speed reconnaissance and attack vehicle, the Desert Fox is designed to operate quickly and quietly, even in the harshest terrain. This 6WD ride is most often driven by Skidmark, the Gi Joe team's resident speed freak - who proves just how fast it can move! The Desert Fox comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Gi Joe Motorized Micro-accessories: bucking the trend of most Gi Joe equipment from their era, these devices are rather small, and can be carried by a single Joe if necessary. Assembled in the field, these motorized devices provide the Joes a variety of useful capabilities. These Micro-accessories come in Classic and Saga styles!
the Mean Dog: a powerful 6WD combat vehicle, the Mean Dog is equipped with a large 20mm automatic cannon and several missile banks. While that's respectable in and of itself, the Mean Dog's secret is that it can be split into not two, but three separate components when necessary! The Mean Dog comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Phantom X-19: a revolutionary aircraft shrouded in secrecy, the Phantom X-19 is a stealth aircraft which can perform as either a fighter or reconnaissance jet. The subject of countless speculation even to this day, the Phantom X-19 is a Holy Grail to conspiracy theorists. The Phantom X-19 comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Remote Piloted Vehicle: giving the Gi Joe team a powerful edge over the enemy, the Remote Piloted Vehicle allows them to surveil an area aerially without actually putting any operatives at risk. Though unarmed, the R.P.V. can 'spot' for the Joes from a remote command and control station! The R.P.V. comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Rolling Thunder: a simply massive ground vehicle, the Rolling Thunder is the king of armored combat. Built with a staggering array of cannons, lasers and even cluster bombs (!), the Rolling Thunder is the perfect ride for intransigent Gi Joe driver Armadillo! The Rolling Thunder comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Skystorm X-wing Chopper: a revolutionary prototype, the Skystorm is a stopped-rotor aircraft, meaning it can take off and land like a helicopter, but its rotor can stop in mid-flight to let its jet turbines take over - which means it's a helicopter and a fighter jet at the same time! The Skystorm comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Swampmasher: a small, twelve wheeled vehicle (having three wheels in place of a regular tire), the Swampmasher is designed to navigate thick and muddy terrain. It doesn't drive so much as almost 'paddle' through most muddy ground, doing so at a slow yet reliable pace. The Swampmasher comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Warthog A.I.F.V.: a replacement for the Joe's old A.P.C., the Warthog Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle fulfills much the same purpose, albiet in a smaller, more heavily armred and armored capacity. This makes it more suitable for small, 'special missions' style operations and the like. The Warthog A.I.F.V. comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Night Force:
the Night Blaster: when the Gi Joe team captured several Cobra Maggots, those villains' newest anti-tank hardware, they decided to put 'em to good use. Refurbishing them for use within the Night Force, these powerful, three-part vehicles have become the Joe team's mighty Night Blasters! Comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Night Raider: a powerful, yet small treaded vehicle, the Night Raider is what happened when the Night Force 'borrowed' the design for Sgt. Slaughter's Triple T. This former Tag Team Terminator has been given a darker paint job, along with muffled gear for extra stealthy operation in the dark. the Night Raider comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Night Shade: a mainstay of the Gi Joe naval arsenal for over twenty years, the S.H.A.R.C. is a vehicle ahead of its time, in that it is a submarine that can take to the air at a moment's notice. This is why the Night Force has made them their own, flying them in a stealthier black shade. The Night Shade comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Night Storm: a small yet powerful vehicle, the Night Storm is essentially a rolling laser cannon. Built for defense while packing a staggering offense, this vehicle is a perfect fit for its driver, who can use it quickly and quietly against Cobra goons! the Night Storm comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Night Striker: a heavily armed and armored hovercraft, the Night Striker can easily function on land or water - serving as either a patrol, assault or liaison vessel. Naturally, considering how Cobra behaves, the 'assault' portion is typically how the Joes roll this craft out! The Night Striker comes in Classic and Saga styles!
Tiger Force:
the Tiger Cat: the Tiger Cat can is an old Snow cat retrofitted to function better in warmer climates than cold - an oddly successful endeavor! Armed with surface to surface / air missiles and ground based 'ski torpedoes', the Tiger Cat commands desert battles. Availability:
the Tiger Cat: the Tiger Cat can is an old Snow cat retrofitted to function better in warmer climates than cold - this modification of the former Arctic / winter gear was a staggering success! Armed with four surface to surface/air missiles and two ground based 'ski torpedoes', the Tiger Cat commands desert battles. Comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Tiger Fly: a slightly modified and repainted Dragonfly XH-1 Attack Copter, the Tiger Fly has tipped the tide of war to the Joe side countless times, and not just because of it's legendary pilot. It's armed to the teeth and incredibly maneuverable - in other words, ideal air support. The Tiger Fly comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Tiger Paw: rebuilt from captured Cobra Ferrets, the Tiger Paws are small, four wheeled all terrain vehicles. They lack special protection for their drivers, but make up for this with high speed and heavy armaments, making them ideal for patrols or reconnaissance missions. The Tiger Paw comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Tiger Rat: itself based loosely upon the design for the A-10, the Rattler is one of Cobra's most infamous fighter planes. It's only fitting then, that Gi Joe put a bunch of captured Rattlers to use on their Tiger Force team - naturally modifying them into the one and only Tiger Rat! Comes in Classic and Saga styles!
the Tiger Shark: after Copperhead and several other Cobra aquatic agents lots their rides to Gi Joe forces, the team decided to put their captured airboats to use against terrorism for a change. A few slight modifications and paint upgrades later, the Joes' Tiger Shark fleet was born! Comes in Classic and Saga styles!
