Origin:
While he may seem possessed of superhuman endurance in the cold, Gregory is naught but a normal human. He lacks ascendant powers of any stripe, whether they would issue forth from significant beneficial genetic mutations, a background rife with occult happenstance, or even power-inducing freak accidents.
Known Powers:
(none)
Equipment:
Arctic Gear: when on the job in the cold, Gregory always wears an insulated, fur-lined winter coat, a sort of insulated helmet with eye protection, insulated boots (with strap-on snow shoes), insulated trousers, and if without a vehicle, skis and ski poles, and a backpack / sled combo device.
Grenades: later in his career as a G.I. Joe operative, Gregory took to carrying several grenades on his person. He can throw these explosives at something (or someone) to inflict Remarkable (30) Edged Attack (fragmentary) damage to his target, and anyone else in his target's area that lacks proper cover.
Knife: Gregory always carries at least one blade with him in a sheath attached to his webbing, as you never know when you'll need to cut through something. Made from Incredible (40) m.s. metals, this tool can be used to cut through items of like m.s., and allows Gregory to inflict Edged Attack damage in melee.
Pistol: a back-up for his rifle, this smaller weapon packs a bit less punch, but does the job when necessary. Gregory can fire this weapon to inflict Typical (6) Shooting damage with a single shot, or Good (10) Shooting damage in a clip-exhausting, semi-automatic hail of leaden doom.
Rifle: his primary weapon, Gregory has taken to wielding a simple rifle as has his fellow G.I. Joe snow trooper, Iceberg. He can fire this powerful firearm to inflict Good (10) Shooting damage per shot, and can do so eight times before he needs to change the clip on this weapon.
Quirks:
(none)
Talents:
Guns: a vital skill that Gregory mastered upon enlisting in the Army, this talent represents his ability to use most any firearms in battle. Whether he's wielding a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, or even esoteric weapons like an elephant gun, Gregory may do so at a +1 CS.
Martial Arts type B: another skill that Gregory picked up in his Army basic training was the ability to fight unarmed if he must. When attacking in melee, whether punching, kicking, head-butting, elbow-smashing, or what-have-you, Gregory may do so as though his listed Ftg score was +1 CS in rank.
Military / United States: the source of all his other skills, this talent represents Gregory's mastery of military protocols and procedures. In addition to offering the man additional military contacts, it acts as a convenient 'origin' piece for the man and all his impressive abilities.
Survival: since it is his job to teach others cold weather survival skills, it would be silly if Gregory didn't have this skill down pat as well. When he finds himself stranded in cold, barren climates, Gregory can whip up enough food, water, and shelter to get by even in such sparse conditions.
Teaching: as his primary military specialty, Gregory has been charged with the education of his fellow soldiers in the fine art of cold weather survival. Just knowing what to do isn't enough, though; he has been trained how to dispense information to others, and make it 'stick' properly.
Contacts:
As a member of the G.I. Joe team, Gregory can readily rely upon his fellow Joes for assistance in a pinch; he's so good at what he does that people tend to take notice whenever the man requires assistance on the job. Furthermore, the man has innumerable military contacts (mostly his students).
Costume:
After the Joe team's temporary deactivation, Gregory adopted a much different suit. This one consists of a white insulated jacket, white trousers (both with gray camo blotches on them), insulated black boots and gloves, khaki-colored webbing for his gear, and a gray knitted cap.
Personality:
Gregory is incredibly tough, mostly because he has to be - and because those he's training need to learn to be just as tough to survive the intense cold of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. He also has 'people problems', though, and doesn't work well with others - unless absolutely necessary, at least.
Real Name: Gregory M. Natale, grade E-7 (later E-8)
Occupation: arctic warfare training instructor
Legal Status: citizen of Austria and the United States with no known criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: none
Group Affiliation: G.I. Joe
Height: 5' 10"
Hair: auburn, later dyed bright red
Eyes: brown
Weight: 170 lbs
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: upon the Joe team's reactivation, Gregory grew out a full beard and moustache, mostly because he could.
Story:
Gregory has always been tough as nails. He used to be in charge of the U.S. Army's cold weather combat training program, teaching qualified grunts the harsh lessons necessary to survive combat amidst unforgiving weather conditions. He was very, very good at what he did.
One notable experiment that he was in charge of involved sequestering cold weather specialist candidates for an entire year in an Army base in Thule, Greenland, in order to see what training and conditioning could better prepare grunts for combat in such harsh climes - the results were rather simple.
No training could prepare a trooper for these terrible conditions - no matter their skills, only the toughest, meanest grunts could last through to the end of this harsh course. As the instructor of these poor experimental troops, Gregory couldn't show sympathy for his charges, though - it was his job not to.
His excellent Arctic performance got noticed by the Joes, though, and they recruited him into their ranks as part of their effort to cultivate a stable of soldiers who specialized in harsh climes. Once he was on the team, it was determined that the man didn't work well with others, though he always got the job done.
He's not a likeable fellow, Gregory, but he's the best there is at what he does, so the other Joes tolerate the man's gruff personality when there's a job to be done - and do have grudging respect for the fellow. They continued to possess this respect, in fact, until the Joe team was taken apart in '94.
Exactly what Gregory did between the time the team was retired - and then reactivated - has yet to be revealed, though the man likely spent a whole lot of time away from civilization. When he was called back into action by General Hawk, though, Gregory didn't hesitate to rejoin the fight against Cobra!
