Doctor Horst Kleinmann
Strength 3x |
Agility 1x |
Intellect 10d |
Willpower 8d |
Powers:
(none)
Cybernetics:
Cybereye: destroyed (or at least rendered useless) in the explosive destruction of his original Dream Machine, Doctor Horst Kleinmann's right eye has been replaced with a rather simple and obvious cybernetic eye replacement. This device has restored vision to that eye, and as it is tinted red, it may allow for infravisual sight, as well. If so, that would function at intensity 5.
Exoskeletal Bracers: these robotic supports enhance Doctor Kleinmann's otherwise useless neural system, allowing him to move about, if only minimally so. As of yet, he has no fine motor controls, but that may change over time, as his minions evolve the technology that prevents him from being permanently bed-ridden as a result of the destruction of his Dream Machine...
Equipment:
the Dream Machine: his pride, joy, and source of income, this device has greatly enhanced Doctor Kleinmann's psychological prowess, essentially by allowing him to enter the dreams of his patients in order to diagnose and treat their mental ills. In essence, while under the influence of the Machine, Doctor Kleinmann can wield intensity 12 dream travel.
This allows the evil Doctor to enter the short-lived pocket planes generated by the sleeping mind. While there, his ability scores are effectively raised to a similar level (12), making him much more physically effective than he is in the real world. It is vital to note, however, that if Kleinmann remains inside a dream past the point of the physical dreamer's death, bad things will happen to him.
After all, his Dream Machine blew up the last time he did this...
Hindrances:
Monstrous: though it allows him to function normally (to stretch the term), his cybernetic exoskeleon makes Doctor Kleinmann pretty darn horrific. In fact, he looks so monstrous, he has a zero (0) willpower for the purposes of convincing folks with a zero (0) edge to not flee upon seeing him.
He's that repulsive.
The only two people likely to avoid this effect, of course, are Udo and Gian, Doctor Kleinmann's two main men. This is, mind you, since they rebuilt him in the first place, leaving him in the sad physical state that he lives in. However, they did keep him alive...
Skills:
Mesmerism: if he can pass an average difficulty Willpower action, opposed by his target's Willpower score, Doctor Kleinmann can place a body under hypnosis and implant behavioral suggestions in their mind, as well as easily pump them for information.
Psychiatry: known the world across for his revolutionary theories in the field, Doctor Kleinmann receives the benefit of an autotrump when using his psychological skills. He can easily diagnose mental problems, as well as determine whether or not a body is under mind control.
Calling:
Explorer: despite his raving insanity and his otherwise repugnant personality, Doctor Kleinmann loves to explore the worlds within the human mind, even if this is ultimately for his own, personal gain. He has worked for years upon years to expand his awareness of the dreaming state, and how to manipulate it...
Costume:
In the real world, Doctor Kleinmann lounged about in a lab coat and casual clothes while doing research, but would wear his dream machine's suit when walking in the subconscious minds of others; it looked like an orange space suit, with green belts supporing various sensors and electronics gear, and had a large green 'cap' device that apparently interfaced his mind with the dream machine.
In the dream world itself, however, he manifests as a big, hairy, furry underwear wearing thug that wielded a big hammer. After his first Dream Machine blew up, however, Kleinmann resorted to wearing a cybernetic brace in order to move about, a brace that he must wear at all times if he wishes to remain ambulatory. If he removes it, he must rely on his assistants to put it back on.
Personality:
He's Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs (TM). Kleinmann is an aberrant nut case with touches of megalomania, paranoia, and violent mood swings thrown in for good measure. He believes that he is the sole being that should be able to explore the realm of dreams, and as such, is willing to go to any lengths to secure his exclusive 'rights' to them, even murder...

Story:
Doctor Horst Kleinmann is an incredibly smart man that decided, in order to help people, to become a psychologist. He was a particularly fast study, and by the time he was out of college, his knowledge practically exceeded that of his instructors. One area of knowledge that Kleinmann enjoyed expanding on was dream theory. His ideas in this area proved to be downright revolutionary.
As such, the Doctor eventually attracted a body of researchers who wanted to work with him. Over time, two of them sort of fell in love with each other and got married, returning to their native America in order to continue their dream research on familiar territory. Of course, this rankled Kleinmann some, who came to believe that his so-called students meant to simply steal his work.
Over the next twenty years, Doctor Kleinmann nonetheless continued his life's work, finally completing the Dream Machine, a device that allows a body to enter the world of the subconscious, dreaming mind. Around this time, however, the Remsen family (the two researchers that'd left him to get married) asked Kleinmann to take their son, Keith, in to teach him psychology.
This finally drove Kleinmann over the edge and, believing that it was a plot to get their hands on his Dream Machine, Kleinmann agreed to take Keith on as an apprentice. However, he planned on wiping the entire family out before they could ship Keith over to his Zurich stronghold, sending a minion to blow them up with an explosive device disguised as a piece of luggage in the Dallas airport.
Though the bomb blew up a bit prematurely, it did slay half of the Remsen family, sparing only Keith and his little sister, Teddy. Kleinmann pretty much decided that the issue was resolved, save for one detail: the bomber he sent to America was still alive, having only been mostly killed by the premature detonation that he'd set up in the thing... no need to leave a trail back to him, mind you.
As such, Kleinmann began to enter the dreams of his minion, trying to scare him to death in his weakened state. However, Kleinmann didn't count on Keith's alteration in the wake of the White Event, and as such, Keith also wound up entering this man's dreams, and confronted Kleinmann as he killed his minion in the guise of the Gnome.
After several encounters, Keith (as Nightmask) battled Kleinmann (as the Gnome) in the terrorist's mind as he died. Keith managed to win this fight, and tried to help Kleinmann escape the dying man's mind, as Kleinmann didn't have a psychic anchor like his sister Teddy. He failed, however, and Kleinmann was left in the psionic void created by the dead man's mind.
This caused his Dream Machine to explode, however, and Kleinmann would've died if not for his two faithful minions, Udo and Gian. These two rogue scientists rebuilt Kleinmann with primitive cybernetics and experimental medical procedures, as he was their meal ticket; you see, the research they perform is highly unethical, to say the least, and only Kleinmann would fund it with impunity.
However advanced their skills were, however, Udo and Gian could only fix so much. Though still alive, Kleinmann was rendered barely ambulatory, and is now a walking cybernetic horror. Nonethless, Doctor Kleinmann decided to get even with his sudden arch-nemesis, first by sending one of his special creations, Mistress Midnight, out to get him.
This mentally deranged paranormal hit-woman failed in her task, not able to eliminate Nightmask, but she did manage to get a reading on Keith's sister's brain-wave patterns. This would allow him to enter her dreams in order to get back at Nightmask, and he was going to get on this right away; however, Doctor Kleinmann's revenge was never enacted within the Nightmask series.
Or anywhere else, for that matter.
As an aside, this story was supposed to appear in issue five of the Nightmask series, but for some reason, it just never happened. Another story was printed in its stead, and nobody ever got back to the evil and deranged Doctor Kleinmann. As such, for the sake of continuity, it is assumed that Kleinmann enacted this final scheme against Nightmask, but that it failed.
Or, since he was in such bad shape, maybe mortality finally caught up with Kleinmann - it's hard to say, really. At any rate, we'll never know, as it is incredibly unlikely that Doctor Horst Kleinmann will ever appear in any comic (or anywhere else) ever again. Of course, one never knows, and this may not be the end of this villain's story. He may yet haunt the dreams of heroes once again...

Doctor Kleinmann had two faithful minions, rogue scientists known only as Udo and Gian. These two practiced experimental cybernetics and medical techniques, respectively, and worked for Kleinmann as he would happily fund their rather unethical researches, while no other financial body had the stomach to. Probably, of course, because if anybody found out, they'd be in really hot water...
Now, Udo was a tall, thin older man with black hair and a thin little moustache. He typically wore a plain, navy blue suit over a gray turtle-neck shirt. He was the cyberneticist of the two. By far more interested in making newer and better technologies to interface with the human body, Udo cared not for simply problems like 'ethics' and 'morality'.
Gian, on the other hand, was a short, balding man who wore a green pair of operation room smocks. He was (if you hadn't guessed) the medical mind in Kleinmann's employ. Not quite the moral vacuum his counterpart represented, Gian resented the capricious and insane nature of his employer, and wished to eventually get out from under his thumb and be recognized for his 'good' works.
