Untold Tales of the New Universe: Spitfire: Danger Zone
(Text)
Issue 1: Beginnings
After Doctor Karl Swensen is slain by a man wearing the Mark 1 version of his Man Amplified Experimental suit, Professor Jenny Swensen is informed that she has twenty four hours to clear her family home of any personal effects; her father's home was actually built on the grounds of Krotze International, a research firm owned by Fritz Krotze.
Though the official police report states that Doctor Swensen was killed in a freak electrical accident, Jenny becomes suspicious of foul play after she uncovers a cryptic message from her dead father in Krotze's computer banks. Before she can read it, however, she is ushered out by security agents working for her father's former boss, her twenty four hours having expired.
After talking to several folks for advice, including her tai-chi sensei and the Troubleshooters (Giotti, Ferris, Eric, Andy, and Terry), five genius students attending M.I.T. (where she teaches), Jenny decided to break into the Krotze facility to get that message. Of course, the Troubleshooters decided to help her out, without telling her, by distracting the guards long enough for her to get inside undetected.
Inside, she discovered them and the Mark 2 M.A.X. suit, which her father had hidden from his employer. He had done so because he'd begun to doubt Krotze's ultimate motives for his radical heuristics technology, and this ultimately cost him his life. The note he'd left for Jenny assured her of that beyond any shadow of a doubt.
Armed with this knowledge, if not with proof of what she knew, Jenny decided to steal the Mark 2 suit and the mobile laboratory it was built with. This laboratory consisted of three mack trucks, the trailers of which housed the work space needed to maintain the M.A.X. suit. Of course, Krotze wasn't about to stand for this.
Hiding out in the woods about an hour outside of Boston, Jenny began using the M.A.X. suit to dig a hole in a nearby mountain (to hide the three trucks in), when she and the Troubleshooters were tracked down and attacked by a man piloting the Mark 1 M.A.X. prototype. She trounced the man in the M.A.X. suit, and then warned Krotze off (he was watching nearby).
After this, Jenny then took off with the Troubleshooters for a new hiding place, where they wound up rescuing a girl from a deep well (as seen in Star Brand # 2).
Issue 2: Behemoth
After that highly publicized event, Jenny and one of the Troubleshooters (Andy) made for Parker's Hill, New Hampshire, just across the border from Massachuetts, where the two techies began to break down the Mark 2 M.A.X. suit to see how it ticked. During these tests, Jenny spotted a truck full of drunken hunters drive over a cliff nearby.
Using an electromagnetic clamp, she snagged the truck before it could topple all the way down the cliff face, though the drunken men told a bunch of reporters all about it. Local media, after Jenny's rescue of that child in the well, jumped all over the story, revealing their approximate location to anybody that was looking for her. A body like Krotze, for instance.
Professor Jenny Swensen regretted the media coverage, after being warned to keep her suit under wraps by Star Brand, but it couldn't have been helped, considering the circumstances. Of course, Jenny would soon come to regret that news blurb, as Krotze was about to send something really big her way, another weapon of devastating power...
Meanwhile, the rest of the Troubleshooters were busy adapting the M.A.X. technology in new and innovative ways. Giotti, for instance, had developed a sort of harness he called 'Strongarms', that allowed him to perpetrate great feats of strength. For instance, he could easily crush an iron ball bearing 4 inches in diameter.
Knowing that Krotze was going to try something, the Troubleshooters broke into Krotze's research facility, where Giotti wound up getting caught by Krotze security, shortly before a train carrying a deadly payload left the facility towards New Hampshire. The others followed the train (containing Giotti as well) to its final destination, where they finally spotted the new weapon.
It was a tank. A really big, black, glossy tank that Krotze had apparently developed for the U.S. defense department. And he was using it to get Jenny Swensen and her M.A.X. suit back, once and for all. Even though she knew it was a trap, Jenny put on the armor in order to rescue Giotti, after the other Troubleshooters got together with her and warned her of his plight.
While Jenny distracted the Behemoth tank, the four free Troubleshooters managed to liberate their impulsive pal. Once he was free and clear, Jenny managed to spot and clip the wire guide that controlled the unmanned tank and sever it. While it was helpless, she pitched it over the cliffside that started this whole mess, and decided to go after Krotze herself...
