* Amongst humans, at least. In +40 to fellow Autobots, In -40 regarding Predacons / Decepticons.
Origin:
Like the other members of the Build Team, and as are his fellow Autobots, Grimlock is an electromechanical entity from Cybertron, a robot that strives to prevent Decepticon dominion of the universe. This alien may also be from another time period, making him doubly out of place on earth.
Known Powers:
Cybertronian Physique: like his fellow Autobots, Grimlock is a robotic entity of Cybertronian design and origin. As such, this master tactician has, by his very nature, the use of a large variety of abilities that reflect this. His very body gives Grimlock these super human powers:
* Armor Skin: like most Cybertronians, Grimlock was built (or formed) with a reinforced steel frame, one that offers him Excellent (20) resistance to injury. This makes him immune to most basic human attack forms, and moderately resistant to his fellow robots. His defense breaks down as follows:
Ex 20 / Ty 6 / Fe 2 / Sh 0 / Sh 0
* Growth: most Cybertronians have some degree of control over their size, no matter what form they take. Due to his significant height in his humanoid mode, Grimlock has this power via technicality; he may very well grow somewhat while transforming, but doesn't appear to do so.
According to the standard Growth rules, Grimlock has this power at Incredible (40) rank, making him stand approximately twenty feet tall. Since his Strength rank is the same, this offers him no combat benefit, but on the other hand, human-sized folks targeting Grimlock receive a +2 CS to hit him in battle.
The Ultimate Powers Book, however, gives Grimlock this power at Typical (6) rank, making him out to be a bit over three times a normal human's size. This would grant this military mastermind a +1 CS to the Strength score listed above (raising it to Amazing (50)), thus adding 10 points to his Health.
According to the Transformers MSH Sourcebook, on the other hand, Grimlock's statistics are geared towards mixing it up with beings of like size. As such, when fighting folks of normal human size, he should receive a +2 CS to the damage he inflicts upon them (+1 CS per 2 CS of growth).
Finally, per the Universal Heroes rules, Grimlock has a +1 size factor. As such, he inflicts +1 CS damage vs normal human opponents, and has 1 CS of Damage Reduction against them. On the other hand, he is at a -1 CS to hit them in combat, while they receive a +1 CS to hit him.
* Invulnerability to Disease and Toxins: like all robots, Grimlock is highly resistant to diseases and poisons that would kill organic beings. He possesses this resistance at Class 1k rank versus organic pathogens, and at Unearthly (100) versus more chemically creative substances.
* Microscopic / Telescopic Vision: all Transformers have the ability to alter their visual sensitivity as is necessary, where distance is concerned. Functioning at Feeble (2) rank, this power lets them see objects up to a mile distant with ease, as well as allowing them to read items on microfiche.
Gestalt: as a member of the Autobot Build Team, Grimlock can merge with his fellows in order to form the mighty Landfill. This Amazing (50) ranked power allows him to join with Wedge in one of three possible configurations - serving as either of Landfill's legs or both of his arms.
Headlights: to better emulate earthen vehicles (and since they come in handy in the dark), most automotive Transformers on earth are equipped with a set of convenient headlights. These twin lamps can be used to generate Excellent (20) intensity illumination, making driving at night no problem.
Pincer Shovel: while Grimlock's shovel can be used as a weapon in either of his modes, he can wield it as a powerful, insect-like pincer in his humanoid form. It can inflict his Strength rank in Edged Attack damage as a shovel, but this device's pincer mode works at +1 CS, and can be used to grapple, too.
Shapechange: whenever he desires, Grimlock can transform between his humanoid and backhoe mode, and often does so quickly in battle to maximize the use of his abilities. This power is voice-activated, however ("Grimlock, Transform!"). His backhoe mode has these vehicular statistics:
C In 40 |
S Gd 10 |
B Mn 75 |
P Ex 20 |
Tunneling: Grimlock can use this power either by himself or in tandem with the rest of the Build Team. If tunneling solo, Grimlock may do so at Good (10) rank, but if all four members of the Build Team work together, they can dig through the earth with Remarkable (30) ability.
Equipment:

Quirks:

Talents:
Engineering / Construction: as are the other members of the Build Team, Grimlock is a competent engineer, able to build any item or structure he needs to, thanks to his advanced Cybertronian knowledge. He should receive a +1 CS on any FEAT required when building anything.
Military: while he can hold his own in a fight, Grimlock's true strengths lie in his mastery of martial tactics. A veteran of countless conflicts, Grimlock knows what works - and what doesn't - in the middle of a fight, and can lend this expertise to his allies in battle... to startling effect.
Skill / Power Pincer: his only true 'weapon' skill, this talent describes Grimlock's competence in the use of his only inherent weapon, his power pincer. He can use this device, or any similar, hydraulic grappling / slashing mechanism, as though his Ftg was +1 CS higher than is listed above.
Contacts:
As a member of the Build Team, Grimlock is naturally able to call upon his fellows for assistance at any time - though it's more likely that he will be helping them (or just Wedge) in a pinch. Furthermore, being an Autobot means that he can count on that large group of warriors for help when necessary.
Likeness:
In his vehicular configuration, Grimlock appears to be a mundane, ordinary backhoe - if deep green in coloration. However, when he transforms into his humanoid mode, Grimlock appears to be an incredibly tall, green and silver robot built from various bits and pieces of a backhoe.
Personality:
Though he always bears a scowl and appears menacing, Grimlock is actually a rather upbeat, happy sort of guy. He is cool and collective in battle, judging its progress and how to best win in virtually any situation, but this confidence evaporates when it comes to the best way to instruct others how to fight.

Story:
Many details of Grimlock's origin are somewhat murky, but his particular skills suggest that he is an experienced veteran of numerous extended conflicts. He has an intimate knowledge of military tactics, and has a very good idea what will help a force win virtually any battle it is involved in.
How he came to work with Wedge and the Build Team is similarly a mystery, but he has emerged as a sort of second in command of the group - he tends to call the shots when Wedge is not around (or otherwise indisposed). Not that this is needed, for the group is almost always fully assembled at any given time.
Hoping to teach Wedge everything he knows about waging war and military tactics, Grimlock has naturally accompanied the energetic young Autobot to earth, where he lends his skills to the Build Team's efforts to create and maintain the Autobots' various devices and systems on our world.
While Grimlock is very well-versed in tactics and such, the truth is that the Build Team hasn't done much fighting as a team - this caused the group's first battle with Megatron's earth-bound flunkies to go somewhat badly, when Wedge convinced Optimus Prime to let them fight before they were totally ready.
However, logging hundreds of simulator-hours, not to mention fighting a few more real-life battles, Grimlock has started to weld the Build Team into an effective fighting force thanks to his ceaseless efforts to hammer battle tactics and military techniques into Wedge's rather stubborn head.
By the time the group had gained confidence in itself, though, the war here was over; in a titanic conflict, the Autobots managed to finally defeat all of the Predacons and Decepticons on earth. After shipping their evil, captured cousins off-world, the Autobots were finally free to return to their home on Cybertron.
Once they cleaned up their messes here, that is. Though the others can leave at their leisure, it has fallen to Grimlock and his friends on the Build Team to remove all the Autobot technology scattered across the earth. As such, Grimlock may remain on earth for quite some time.
It took the Build Team years to set it all up, after all...
