* Amongst humans, at least. Mn +75 among Autobots, Mn -75 among Predacons / Decepticons.
Origin:
As are all the other Autobots on earth, Ultra Magnus is an electromechanical being that hails from Cybertron, a robot that strives to prevent Decepticon domination of the universe itself. This incredibly powerful alien may also be from another time period, making him doubly out of place on earth.
Known Powers:
Cybertronian Physique: like his fellow Autobots, Ultra Magnus is a robotic entity of Cybertronian design and origin. As such, this legendary warrior has, by his very nature, the use of a large variety of abilities that reflect this. His very body gives Ultra Magnus these super human powers:
* Armor Skin: like most Cybertronians, Ultra Magnus was built (or formed) with a reinforced steel frame, one that offers him Excellent (20) resistance to injury. This makes him immune to most basic human attack forms, and moderately resistant to his fellow robots. His defense breaks down as follows:
Ex 20 / Ty 6 / Fe 2 / Sh 0 / Sh 0
* Growth: most Cybertronians have some degree of control over their size, no matter what form they take. Due to his significant height in his humanoid mode, Ultra Magnus has this power via technicality; he may very well grow somewhat while transforming, but doesn't appear to do so.
According to the standard Growth rules, Ultra Magnus has this power at Remarkable (30) rank, making him stand approximately eighteen feet tall. Since his Strength rank is (much) higher, this offers him no combat benefit, but on the other hand, human-sized folks targeting Magnus receive a +1 CS to hit him in battle.
The Ultimate Powers Book, however, gives Ultra Magnus this power at Typical (6) rank, making him out to be three times a normal human's size. This would grant this Autobot warrior a +1 CS to the Strength score listed above (raising it to Unearthly (100)), thus adding 25 points to his Health score.
According to the Transformers MSH Sourcebook, on the other hand, Ultra Magnus' statistics are geared towards mixing it up with beings of like size. As such, when fighting folks of normal human size, he should receive a +2 CS to the damage he inflicts upon them (+1 CS per 2 CS of growth).
Finally, per the Universal Heroes rules, Ultra Magnus has a +1 size factor. As such, he inflicts +1 CS damage vs normal human opponents, and has 1 CS of Damage Reduction against them. On the other hand, he is at a -1 CS to hit them in combat, while they receive a +1 CS to hit him.
* Invulnerability to Disease and Toxins: like all robots, Ultra Magnus is highly resistant to diseases and poisons that would kill organic beings. He possesses this resistance at Class 1k rank versus organic pathogens, and at Unearthly (100) versus more chemically creative substances.
* Microscopic / Telescopic Vision: all Transformers have the ability to alter their visual sensitivity as is necessary, where distance is concerned. Functioning at Feeble (2) rank, this power lets them see objects up to a mile distant with ease, as well as allowing them to read items on microfiche.
* Radio Transceiver: as are most all Transformers on earth, Ultra Magnus is equipped with an audio / video transmission system. This communications rig allows him instant contact with any other Autobot on earth, having Excellent (20) range (25,000 miles).
Flight: a rarity where Autobots are concerned, Ultra Magnus has the power of flight, thanks to a very large set of rocket boosters (and stabilizer wings) attached to his back. He can achieve Unearthly (100) rank flight, allowing him to move at about 600 miles per hour in the air - not bad, eh?
Gestalt: Ultra Magnus is an extremely powerful warrior in his own right; when sufficiently motivated, there is little that can stand in his way. However, when even his might is not enough, he can combine with his brother, Optimus Prime, to form Omega Prime; this is an Unearthly (100) rank power.
Headlights: to better emulate earthen vehicles (and since they come in handy in the dark), most automotive Transformers on earth are equipped with a set of convenient headlights. These twin lamps can be used to generate Excellent (20) intensity illumination, making driving at night no problem.
Machine Guns: mounted on the front of his cab in his car carrier mode, these twinned weapons are rotary-barrel assault weapons. Ultra Magnus can fire them to inflict Monstrous (75) Shooting damage in a short burst, or Unearthly (100) Shooting damage in a sustained chain of fire.
Shapechange: whenever he desires, Ultra Magnus can transform between his humanoid and futuristic car carrier mode, and often does so quickly in battle to maximize the use of his abilities. This power is voice-activated, however ("Ultra Magnus, Transform!"). His car mode has these vehicular statistics:
C Un 100 |
S Un 100 |
B Rm 30 |
P Ex 20 |
Stun Beams: in his vehicle mode, Ultra Magnus can strike an opponent (or opponents) with a blast of electricity that can render them senseless. This Unearthly (100) Stunning blast can affect those inside his car carrier cage or anybody that happens to be behind him.
Stun Cluster: built into his arms and shoulders, Ultra Magnus has a small arsenal of mini-missiles that he can fire at an opponent when he feels the need. These missiles inflict the damage rating below individually, +1 CS if a few hit, and +2 CS if they all hit. They have these vehicular statistics:
C Am 50 |
S Mn 75 |
B Gd 10 |
Damage Amazing (50) Force |
Waterwalking: in his vehicle mode, Ultra Magnus can manage buoyancy in order to actually drive on a liquid surface, though he can only move at Feeble (2) speeds when doing so - 15 m.p.h. This power doesn't work in his humanoid mode, though - and it's surprising it works at all, when you get down to it...
Equipment:
Blue Bolts: Ultra Magnus' primary weapon, this twin cannon can be used to devastating effect by the Autobot warrior. It consists of both a laser cannon and a rotary barrel machine gun, both of which can inflict Unearthly (100) Armor Piercing damage per shot (Energy and Shooting damage, respectively).
He can fire one weapon or both, as he sees fit; though hitting an opponent with both will enhance the overall damage by +1 CS, he seems to do this very rarely, which may indicate that doing so is a severe drain on his power. And, as arrogant as he is, he wouldn't want to look weak around his fellow Transformers...
Of course, Ultra Magnus can also make a third attack with the blue bolts - namely, he can launch some heavy duty missiles from the thing. As opposed to the small swarm of concussion missiles he can fire from his own body, the two missiles loaded into the blue bolts work as follows:
C Am 50 |
S Mn 75 |
B Ex 20 |
Damage Unearthly (100) Edged Attack |
the Matrix: the Matrix is an incredibly powerful computer meta-program that can be used by its chosen wielder for various purposes. While it was originally given to Optimus Prime, the current leader of the Autobots, Ultra Magnus has shown that he can access it on certain occasions, as well.
Now, the Matrix is capable of doing a great many things, but most of its abilities are shrouded in mystery - and it is doubtful that Ultra Magnus has the ability to use it as Optimus Prime can. However, he has done so on at least one occasion - which saved the lives of several Autobots.
You see, he can channel the Matrix's powers into another Autobot if necessary, the result of which being that he will be greatly enhanced in power (as is the case with the Autobot Brothers' 'super charge' abilities). He was not in control of this use of the Matrix, though, and may not be able to duplicate it intentionally.
See Optimus Prime's description for more on this vastly powerful device / program.
Quirks:
Stubbornness 2: one of Ultra Magnus' less endearing traits is his extreme stubbornness - once he's made up his mind in some fashion or another, it's almost impossible to convince him to change his course. In order to capitulate to others, he must first pass a Psyche FEAT at -2 CS (assuming he wants to).
Talents:
Advanced Guns: Ultra Magnus is highly skilled in the use of various energy-slinging projectile weapons. This mostly because of his extensive practice with his blue bolts, but he can wield other devices of this type with similar ability, doing so as though his Agility score was +1 CS in rank.
Aerial Combat: while he is quite the scrapper on the ground, Ultra Magnus seems to excel while fighting enemies in the air - or attacking those on the ground while he's airborne. Whenever he's engaged in combat while in the air, Ultra Magnus should make all combat FEATs at a +1 CS.
Guns: in addition to using high-impact energy weapons, Ultra Magnus is also well-versed in the use of standard, chemical-propellant slug-throwers. Whenever using such weaponry - whether or not it's integral to his person - Ultra Magnus does so at a +1 CS to his Agility rank.
Leadership: despite his considerable character flaws, Ultra Magnus literally exudes confidence and a can-do attitude. As such, he's a natural leader, and any team that he's leading into battle may add 50 points to its Karma Pool if it has one, for the duration of his tenure as their general / tactician.
Contacts:
As a very powerful Autobot, even one who seems to be more of a 'freelance' operative than a team player, Ultra Magnus can rely upon his fellows for assistance should he need it (though things usually seem to go the other way). This includes his brother, Optimus Prime, who he has... issues with.
Likeness:
In his car carrier mode, Ultra Magnus resembles an angular, futuristic car carrier made from blue and white steel, with a blue and gray car 'cage' pulled along behind him. In his humanoid form, though, he appears to be a rather tall robot (with very long legs) made from various tractor trailer parts.
Personality:
Ultra Magnus is a brave and cunning warrior. He's also smug and arrogant when you get down to it though, feeling that he is the Autobot most worthy of leadership - and thus the Matrix. This has caused him to be quite bitter regarding his brother being the Autobot leader, and he's had issues with Prime for eons.

Story:
Along with his brother, Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus was a legendary hero of the Cybertronian civil wars, having won battle after battle thanks to both his impressive power and battle prowess. When the wars were finally over, though, a rift had formed between Magnus and Prime, over leadership of the Autobots.
While he felt that he was the one who should lead his fellows, and become the so-called King of Cybertron, Ultra Magnus was passed over for leadership by Vector Sigma. This super-computer, the so-called Allspark, felt that Optimus Prime would make a better leader than Magnus, and thus gave him the Matrix.
Having gained this item, Optimus Prime became even more powerful and wise, but Ultra Magnus felt betrayed over this point; he was the stronger warrior, after all. Enraged, Magnus left Cybertron, wandering for years upon years in the depths of space, fighting Predacons and Decepticons where he found them.
Eventually, Ultra Magnus' anger over this situation brought him back to Cybertron to seize the Matrix for himself, but he found upon his arrival that Optimus Prime wasn't there, but on a planet called earth. As such, he headed there, crossing time and space, to settle the score one and for all.
Upon his arrival, Magnus wound up getting on the bad side of the Autobots, Decepticons and Predacons on earth, though he finally had his fight with Prime - the result of which found the two of them merging, for the very first time, into the mighty Omega Prime - the most powerful of all Autobots.
Not counting Fortress Maximus, of course.
This only served to make Ultra Magnus even more angry about what was going on, however. He still wanted the Matrix, but became somewhat confused when, during a heavy duty battle between Prime's forces and Megatron, he manifested the Matrix's powers himself - supercharging the Autobot Brothers.
Not quite sure what was happening, Ultra Magnus decided to cool it for awhile, and wandered the earth to seek the answers to his nagging questions. Naturally, he would come across the Autobots again and again, especially once Megatron (and later Galvatron) discovered where Fortress Maximus was at.
This forced Ultra Magnus and his brother, Optimus Prime, to keep facing each other, and as time went on they seemed to become less antagonistic towards each other. They still had issues, of course (well, Ultra Magnus did, at any rate), but they could at least work together against their enemies.
Once the Autobots had ultimately defeated Galvatron and his many minions in their final gambit to seize Fortress Maximus and his unstoppable energies, Ultra Magnus took it upon himself to ship the captured Predacons and Decepticons back to Cybertron - within the confines of Fortress Maximus itself!
Commanding the most powerful Autobot in existence seemed quite a compliment to Ultra Magnus' capabilities and prowess, so perhaps he has finally buried the hatchet he bears for Optimus Prime. After all, he's apparently got some of the Matrix, and more than enough responsibility to keep him busy now...
