the Posse Pillory
This summary of the Posse Pillory has been compiled by Sticks McLellan, one of the Agency's most hard-hitting investigators (take that as you will). While information on the individual Mindwatch cronies in the Posse has been uncovered by other Agency operatives, Sticks was the lady who pulled it all together, and figured out why the Posse was created in the first place - and why it disbanded...* - Mike 013
Looking into events surrounding the so-called Posse Pillory's rather short existence wasn't too hard; Mindwatch is still trying to downplay their incredibly public activities to this very day. Conspicuous in the extreme, this group was assembled by the Seven Dimensional Man, a long-term Mindwatch operative who ran a criminal troubleshooting operation in his spare time, and had a bone to pick.
You see, the 7-D Man had been hired to eliminate the vigilante known as Stone Cold, since he and his Mindwatch friend Mindgame were interfering in his client's operations. So, the 7-D Man threw the duo back into the distant past, but was promptly beaten to a pulp as a result. When he regained consciousness, the 7-D Man fled back into our present, leaving his targets to die a natural death in the past.
Imagine his surprise when the duo made it back on their own, thanks to some mystic artifact known as the Stellar Key.
So, having already collected the money promised him for the job, the Seven Dimensional Man took a second stab at Stone Cold when the opportunity arose, but this fight didn't go much better. It went worse, in fact, after the 7-D Man's head was phased into a brick wall. Amazingly, the man survived this experience by mastering the power of phasing himself - doing so very, very quickly indeed (will to survive, etc...).
After Mindwatch did what it could to heal him, the man was left with a comical, brick-like face, giving him the appearance of nothing more than a particularly cheesy 'Dick Tracy' villain. So, ol' Brickface decided that he'd had enough, and plotted Stone Cold's demise in great detail. He knew he would need help in this, though, since Stone Cold had a team of vigilante friends to lean on, so the 7-D Man assembled his own.
Naturally, most Mindwatch operatives wouldn't help one of their fellows settle a personal grudge, but the 7-D Man solved this problem by lying to most of his comrades. He said that Stone Cold went after him because of his status as a psi, and either bribed or cajoled those who saw through this silly deception until they agreed to help him out in his plan. Thus was the Posse Pillory born - a powerful gang of psi hit-men!
The Seven Dimensional Man's team consisted of AceTone, an incredibly powerful metapsi with natural strength-boosting abilities, Brainrave, the psipath with a severe electronia fetish, Deion, a would-be god and student theonicist, Mágico, a potent psychoturge with a fae ancestry, Nonce the (almost overmind) superpsi, and Xacatecas José, a psikinetic focusing on dangerous displays of energy discharge.
As soon as they were ready, the Posse Pillory abducted Mindgame, though they didn't know she was one of their own until they had secured her, and some of the team recognzied her... whoops. This caused quite a moral quandry within the Posse, especially when Mindgame's friends got involved in a life-or-death struggle with the powerful techno-sorceress dragon Elys, and simply didn't notice her kidnapping.
This was all the more maddening since the group was hiding out in a penthouse adjacent to their own, and was in fact the staging ground that our own Señor Barnett was using to investigate Och, one of said vigilantes. Weeks passed, during which time the Posse was growing somewhat antsy, being forced to hold both Mindgame and Barnett hostage in order to make their plan work; it was too late to stop now.
Things grew to a boil when someone else entirely came looking for Mindgame. This was Geoffrey McAlister, a powerful psi in his own right, and a man who was trained in the psikinetic arts by the same fellow who had mentored Mindgame herself. When McAlister found the girl, Mindgame's so-called friends returned to Och's penthouse down the hall, and bedlam broke out immediately thereafter.
Since this particular building was inside one of Scalara's hypercity nodes, it made a natural nexus of space-time travelers, and the top floor of the building was chock full of ascendant human residents, such as Och, Charlie Chicanery I and II, and Wendell Wherever. Perhaps due to some sort of cosmic alignment, all manner of these people's enemies decided to drop in on them at once.
Hunting Moebius, one of Charlie Chicanery II's friends, Harmonium and Mercykiller hit-men from Sigil manifested, as did a gang of Chrono Corps thugs looking for Gunslinger (another of Charlie II's pals). As this chaos ensued, McAlister started breaking into Barnett's penthouse, and his fight with the Posse spread into the adjacent penthouses, and the other vigilantes and troublemakers all got involved.
During this mayhem, Deion killed Charlie Chicanery II, one of his long-standing enemies, but other than that little else of merit happened, save for a metric butt-load of super-powered mayhem. In time, it became apparent that the Seven Dimensional Man had simply gone too far, and when Mágico was almost killed, if accidentally, by Stone Cold when he went after his would-be nemesis, Nonce called it a day.
He ordered his fellow Mindwatch operatives to cease all hostilities, and they promptly dealt with the Seven Dimensional Man when Nonce helped a few of them realize just how they'd been duped. With that, Nonce tried to clean up the mess his allies had made, making a little bit of progress thanks to his borrowing of all their powers, and then used the 7-D Man's abilities to get them all back to Mindwatch's base.
There the leaders of Mindwatch interviewed everyone involved with the Posse Pillory to determine just how guilty they were in this affair, and as it turned out, the Seven Dimensional Man was found to be mostly to blame (though a few of his friends joined up for ulterior motives). As such, they booted the man out of the group permanently, and disciplined everyone else involved - but not as severely, that's for sure.
So, since most of the Posse feel somewhat sheepish about their involvement in the Seven Dimensional Man's private enterprise, it's not likely that any of them will help him out again in the future - assuming he asks. The jury is still out on whether or not he's learned his lesson, and will let sleeping dogs lie. He's a proud, arrogant sort, though his eviction from Mindwatch may have finally taken him down a peg or three...

* Of course, it should be noted that the primary purpose of the Posse Pillory, in an 'out of character' sort of sense, is that they were put together as grade 'a' antagonists for the heroes of the v13 electronic mail role playing game. As such, one can include or disallow the presence of the Posse Pillory in their own games, and just use these fellows as standard Mindwatch operatives - that just requires minor history alterations.
