Origin:

the Spirit of '76 is a normal human, a human fighting for the liberty of people everywhere. As such, he has no origin for his powers, since he has none.

Known Powers:

(none)

Equipment:

Cape:
as the Spirit of '76, William wore a brilliant red cape that happened to be bullet proof. It offered him Typical (6) protection from attacks from behind (of the physical sort, at any rate). He could also wrap it about his entire body, in a pinch, to stop whole hails of bullets.

Shield: As Captain America 2, William wielded the solid steel shield of the Captain America, which was of Remarkable (30) material strength. It offered him the following protection from the various attack forms, provided it could be placed in the way of incoming attacks:

* Rm 30 / Gd 10 / Pr 4 / Shift 0 / Shift 0

Quirks:

(none)

Talents:

Martial Arts type A, B, and D:
William was a rather superior hand to hand combatant, and had all the benefits of these three martial arts styles.

Shield: William was proficient in the use of his Captain America-like shield, and could use it effectively in combat (but not as good as Steve Rogers could).

Note: William was thought to have at least two other, as of yet unknown talents. Feel free to fill them in as you please, for the better of the game world you play in. If you use Spirit of '76, of course...

Contacts:

William was a member of the Liberty Legion, and as a result, a member of the Invaders. He can rely on them (or anyone in the All-Winners Squad) for aid should he need to. William was also a member of the British team known as the Crusaders for a time.

Costume:

Black boots, gloves, eye mask, belt, and 'matador' (sort of) style hat. He wore blue stretch fabric 'pants', and white stretch fabric top, which was complete with a groovy collar and ten stars, in a circle, about his torso. He also bore a big honkin' red cape.

Also, the gloves had this sort of stylized wing thing (well, two of 'em) on each one. Thought I'd mention that for the sake of completeness ...

Incidentally, as Captain America 2, William wore a costume identical to his predecessor (you know, Captain America).

Personality:

William was an extremely patriotic fellow. He acted as an American costumed agent during the War (World War 2), and was later granted the big old honor of being Captain America, after the disappearance of the first one (in the polar ice caps).

Real Name: William Nasland
Occupation: adventurer
Legal Status: U.S. citizen with no known criminal record, legally deceased

Group Affiliation: the Liberty Legion, the Invaders, the All-Winners Squad, the Crusaders

Height: 6' 2"
Hair: black
Eyes: blue
Weight: 210
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: none

Story:

The origin of the hero known as the Spirit of '76 is truly unknown, but he was first seen in action with the Crusaders, in their inadverdent attack on the Invaders, thanks to the maneuverings of the evil Nazis that funded the creation of the team in the first place.

This mess-up was eventually sorted out, and the two groups decided to be allies, after all. The Crusaders shoved off their German founders and went their own way, protecting Britain from various Nazi threats during the duration of the team's existence.

However, a true American at heart, William returned from time to time to help the national heroes out there. He assisted the Liberty Legion from time to time, being a sort of part time member, and was also a member of the Invaders, by default (since both teams sort of merged).

After the disappearance of the original Captain America over the polar ice caps, however, the Spirit of '76 was chosen by Presidnet Truman to become the new Captain America. He then joined up with the Invaders (now known as the All-Winners Squad).

He was present during the team's battle with Adam 2, during which he was slain in action. Of course, there was a large number of patriots around to take his place in that era, and as such, the Patriot eventually was named as Captain America 3...

At an indeterminate time before this period, William (as Captain America 2) was pulled into the future by the Contemplator, where he battled a variant earth version of Adam 2 alongside Captain America 1, 3, and 4. I don't know when this was, continuity wise, though...

Using the Spirit of '76 in other stories:

He's dead, so that'd be a hard one to pull off. Oh, sure, you could bring him back from the dead, or say he faked his death, but that would cheapen a big piece of Captain America history. I don't think that William would mind (being alive), but if that sort of thing would bother you, I wouldn't try it.

Instead, you should probably consider making a new Spirit of '76, a new patriotic hero that assumed the proud mantle of the original, one that would do his best to live up to his predecessor's proud history. Well, that would be hard, but as long as he gave it his all, I suppose that would be good enough.

Or she, for that matter. There would be nothing wrong with a female patriotic hero. Just look at Miss America, for one thing. In fact, that's the way I went in my campaign world... Try it - you might just like it!
