Origin:

Don Caldwell, the American Avenger, is simply a normal human. He has no powers, per se, but he still has the itch to defend freedom everywhere!

Known Powers:

(none)

Equipment:

Lariat:
Caldwell can use this weapon to grapple targets, per a standard grappling attack, within one area (44 yards) of himself. It is a rope of Good (10) material strength.

Quirks:

(none known)

Talents:

Languages / English and Spanish:
having lived in Argentina for several years, it is assumed that Caldwell has picked up the language, and can speak it fluently.

Martial Arts B: Caldwell is described as being competent with fisticuffs, and as such, he makes unarmed melee attacks with a +1 CS to his Fighting rank.

Riding / Horse: Caldwell is skilled at riding horseback. He receives no bonus to FEATs made while on a horse, but he can make lariat attacks without penalty while riding...

Weapon / Lariat: Caldwell can also use the lariat with some competence, and he can make grappling attacks with it at +1 CS to his Strength rank.

Contacts:

Don Caldwell never interacted with other heroes from the forties, according to his one published account, at any rate. However, most folks can see that he is a hero of freedom, and should be willing to help him out if he should need aid in his battles.

Costume:

In his role as the American Avenger, Don wore red boots, blue pants, a white shirt, a big red scarf around his neck, and a sort of black half-mask (covers his hair and eyes, but not anything else).

Personality:

Don Caldwell, the American Avenger, is quite a heroic guy. At the mere prompting of an old man, he dons a costume and uses it to fight crime. I'd say he truly cherishes freedom and liberty, and that probably shines through everything he says and does. Overall, I'd have to call him a nice guy.

Real Name: Don Caldwell

Legal Status: American (or Argentinian) citizen with no criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: El Gaucho
Group Affiliation: none

Height: ?
Hair: ?

Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Caldwell wears a pencil-thin moustache.

Story:

After graduating from college in Buenos Aires, American exchange student Don Caldwell is convinved by the grandson of a man that fought with national hero El Gaucho to try on some clothes for him. It would seem that in this getup, Caldwell is an exact match for the long-dead legend, and the old man convinces him to become a hero.

Though he calls himself the American Avenger, Caldwell is known as El Gaucho to the people of Argentina, especially after the statue of El Gaucho disappears from town (since, of course, he looks just like the locals' picture El Gaucho). Caldwell does nothing to correct people, however, and seems to enjoy being their hero.

In his first adventure, the American Avenger rescues some locals from a strange swamp monster, which is a Nazi wandering about in a goofy costume. After interrogating him for a bit, the Avenger finds out where his fellow Germans are hiding out, and then makes for the place right away.

Smashing his way into the headquarters of the evil Baron Girbel, the American Avenger battles with his lackeys while Girbel himself escapes. Finding out that the Nazis are getting their orders from somewhere in America, the Avenger boards the next ship to the States, so he can track Girbel down.

As luck would have it, Girbel was already trying to take this ship over, and his minions had the crew cornered. Making the battle cry 'Por Liberto!', the American Avenger rallies the crew, who finally defeat the Nazis. Continuing on into America, the Avenger begins his battle against the Nazis from America.

Using the American Avenger in other stories:

The further adventures of the American Avenger are as of yet unrevealed. However, he is a colorful and interesting hero to meet in 1940s America, and would be quite handy for random encounters and the like, should a group of adventuring heroes find themselves operating in that day and age. Perhaps the American Avenger will ride again!
