Captain America 3 (Spirit of '76, deceased) Strength Agility Intellect Willpower 8d 6d 3x 6x Hand Size: 4 (25) Edge: 2 Powers: (none) Equipment: Cape (s): as the Spirit of '76, William utilized a brilliant red, bulletproof cape. This item provided the man +3 protection from attack, as long as said attacks come from behind. In a pinch, however, William can wrap the cape around his body, though he cannot attack in an exchange where he does this. Shield (s): though he wielded only his cape as the Spirit of '76, William did utilize Captain America's steel shield as Captain America 2. The shield offers William (or anybody else utilizing it) +3 protection from attacks, though it can also be used as a +3 weapon in a pinch. Hindrances: (none) Skills: Boxing (s): William made it a point to fight with his fists, as opposed to using knives or guns (which he absolutely refuses to do). Skilled with these natural weapons, he can divide his total action score between two melee attacks, the last of which will occur as a contingent action. Martial Arts (a): William may use his Strength or Agility to resolve unarmed melee combat - whichever is to his benefit at a given moment. Also, this skill allows him to reduce the difficulty of actions to catch thrown weapons or to lower the damage inflicted by falling. Shields (s): William can either use his shield as a defensive or offensive item in a given exchange (though not both). However, considering his aversion to using anything besides his fists in battle, he's only likely to use the shield defensively in a fight. Calling: Idealist: William is a tried and true patriot, as he risks his life constantly in the protection of America and the idea it represents. He does this despite the fact that he is essentially a normal human, and is always mixing it up with super-villains and the like. Costume: As the Spirit of '76, William wore a costume that included a long sleeved, collared white shirt with ten blue stars on the chest, blue trousers with white racing stripes, black leather boots and gloves, a black domino mask, a black cocked hat, and a brilliant red cape. As Captain America, William naturally wore that uniform. It included a blue shirt with white lower sleeves, a white star over the heart and red and white stripes on the torso, a blue cowl with white wings and a white 'A' on the forehead, red buccaneer boots and gloves, and blue trousers. Personality: William was an extremely patriotic American, and felt he could best serve his country by fighting its many foes as his idol, Captain America did - namely, up front and personal in a bright costume. Of course, he seemed somewhat ill-at-ease when actually being the Captain, however. Real Name: William Naslund Occupation: adventurer Legal Status: U.S. citizen with no known criminal record, legally deceased Marital Status: single Alias(es), if any: Captain America 3 Group Affiliation: the All-Winners Squad, former member of the Invaders, former member of the Crusaders Height: 6' 2" Hair: black Eyes: blue Weight: 210 Other Distinguishing Characteristics: none Story: Little is known about the origins of the man that would become the Spirit of '76. It has been revealed over time that he seemed to idolize Captain America, watching him with pride on the news reels as the red, white and blue Sentinel of Liberty bashed in Nazi heads week after week. Wishing to do his part, he began to study the Captain's fighting style, training intensely in order to become as good at fighting evil as his hero. He didn't quite manage that, but William nonetheless became quite adept at the unique, unarmed fighting style he evolved over time. Feeling he was ready, he assembled a costumed identity of his own: the Spirit of '76. Traveling to Europe, William went about looking for a means with which he could take the fight to his foes without being an easy mark, and failed after he was taken in by a man known only as Alfie. This fellow was a Nazi agent with a Plan. The idea was to assemble a team of English super heroes and to eventually turn them against the mighty Invaders - of course William wasn't from England but he was a costumed do-gooder in England at the time, so Alfie figured that was good enough. Once his team of Crusaders were ready, he set his plot into motion, but naturally the Invaders were more than a match for these hastily assembled, ersatz heroes. Once it was revealed they'd teamed up in some sort of Axis scheme, the Crusaders quickly disbanded and gave up super heroics. Well... most of them did. William certainly did not. In fact, he continued fighting the good fight for years in Europe, up until late 1945, when he was approached by President Harry S. Truman to fill a role; you see, the original Captain had been lost in battle. Finding it an honor he couldn't refuse, William gladly took the job, though he never seemed to play the part to the expectations of his fellow Invaders - Namor in particular. When the Invaders became the All-Winners Squad, William continued on as Captain America. He did this for some time, until during a fateful encounter with the evil Adam II, an android created by Phineas T. Horton. While he fought off Adam II's minions with the new Bucky, William was mortally injured when one of the artificial beings crushed his very body. William managed to get a warning out to his fellows in the All-Winners Squad before he fell, however. Found mortally wounded by the Patriot, William passed on knowing the world would be saved from Adam 2's dastardly plot to conquer the world. Though he died, the Captain's legacy did not. Moved by his sacrifice, the Patriot then took on the role of America's Sentinel of Liberty, and led the All-Winners Squad to victory against Adam II!
